This is a Consultant led service supported by our Orthoptist to assess and treat children with any suspected eye problems. These may be; - Squint - Amblyopia (Lazy eyesight) - Blurred or double vision for reading, eyestrain - Eye muscle imbalance - Reduced vision
Assessment The Orthoptist will take a detailed history and orthoptic assessment of your child’s eyes and vision. The consultant ophthalmic surgeon will examine your child and refract the eyes (test for glasses). Eye drops may be used to dilate the pupils and prevent the lens from focusing. Diagnosis The diagnoses are made on the same day and treatment options discussed. Occasionally further tests are required to confirm a diagnosis. Treatment The Orthoptist, Helen Collett led by your Ophthalmologist will regularly review and support your child, and advise ongoing treatment. This may be - Occlusion therapy to stimulate and improve vision of amblyopia, with eye patches, frosting of glasses or atropine eye ointment. - Glasses or contact lenses dispensed from your Optometrist. - Orthoptic exercises to improve the ability to follow and fixate - Measurement and assessment of squint for surgery Surgery with your Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon is a day case procedure. What is amblyopia? Amblyopia is defective eyesight which persists after correction of refractive error and removal of any pathological obstacle to vision. It is usually not noticed because a good eye can "fill in" for the malfunctioning amblyopic eye. This is also known as lazy eyesight. Without treatment, the loss of vision usually gets worse and can become permanent, but with early treatment, the damage to vision can be minimised. What is a squint? A squint is a term used for when an eye deviates. There are many different types and causes of squint which require full ophthalmic examination prior to treatment. Payment options Separate invoices for Orthoptist and Ophthalmologist consultations are settled directly with insurance companies or by cheque on the day with self pay patients.
